His subject’s expressions truthfully display the emotional truth. Cartier-Bresson’s style was to be an “inconspicuous, anonymous figure weaving through the streets to capture one perfect instant” However, Klein’s style was more up close and personal, his subjects knew that they were being photographed, and his shots were set up. He, like Cartier-Bresson broke all the rules and did whatever he wanted to do to get a good shot.ĭifferences: I believe Klein’s photographic style was truly influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson my favourite French photographer and the father of photojournalism. A photographer whose career has taken on a life of its own includes: photojournalism and fashion photography. Klein is 85 years old, and his photo shoots take place on streets all over the world.

Similarities: I find William Klein’s style of photography, like Henri Cartier-Bresson’s to be unmistakable: stark, detailed, and full of high contrast.

He was ranked 25th on “Professional Photographer’s list of 100 most influential photographers.” (.uk, n.d.) William Klein was born in 1928, in New York, New York, and currently resides in France. No one can deny that both photographers capture real world photos in black and white, of genuine people, who are in the streets of random cities, and involved in real life situations every day. However, another photographer by the name of William Klein (now 85 years old) seems to carry on where Cartier-Bresson left off, but there are more differences than similarities in their photos. His street photographs teach me about what composition looks like, his use of light and dark elements (black and whites show sharp contrast in the highlights shadows), crisp design elements, the delights found in every day occurrences and human behaviour, what true emotion looks like in his subjects, and in some cases, the empathy he has for his subjects.(Photograph 2) His decisive moments really set him apart from all other photographers! He became famous because he captured a single moment and had it last forever.Īll photos are Cartier-Bresson’s photos are from: The ‘street’ is the genre for him, and he finds delight in every day occurrences. The following photographs have been chosen because his photographs of women are really interesting to me. Every street photo he shot was spontaneous… we watch life unfold. The freedom of these photos is clear: no standards, no rules, and even no composition or graphic consideration involved.

Street photography is open and spontaneous, and the street is open to anyone who wants to use it. He loved taking candid shots that represented a slice of life in any city he worked in. Back then, photographers found meaning in the unusual and unpredictable photographs they so desperately sought, and it’s not so different today. I can see how his photographs were inspired from the surrealism movement (circa 1924) which features elements of surprise. I believe these elements ruled his style. Henri Cartier-Bresson’s (1908 – 2004) love for candid photography encompassed great qualities: simultaneous recognition for his subjects, significant events, and the decisive moments.

When we look into the masters of this photographic medium we find Henri Cartier-Bresson and William Klein. Photojournalism captures reality and tells stories, we see these types of photos every day. Photographers who chronicle life as we know it, in my opinion, tend to seek out subjects who portray the qualities of honesty and authenticity.
